There are roughly 21 different halfway homes in New Jersey alone. The prime concern of the authorities is that the number of walkaways has been decreasing tremendously. It is this reason that local authorities are apprehensive about these halfway homes. The patients in these halfway homes, themselves feel apprehensive about leaving and of their future in society. They often have a fear of not being accepted by the general population.

Though it is not all bad news as people have their addictions removed and are able to start undertaking in the normal routine of life, even if there is that dread of rejoining society.

Many changes have taken place in terms of laws for patients in these halfway homes, to help them upon release back into New Jersey. The lawmakers in New Jersey have brought about programs to ensure all patients of halfway homes are able to attain social security cards once they get out of the homes (this is to help transition the patients back into the general population). The halfway homes themselves are judged on the number of walkaways that leave positively.

Care is taken nowadays to ensure that the drug addict or alcoholic has an atmosphere and environment where they can feel safe and away from all those addictions. The center is also in charge of taking care of the recovery phase, as this time is very fragile in terms of people going back to their addictions. The average stay in a halfway home will last around 3-6 months and it is all voluntary (including them starting all the way through to discharge). As many of the patients are not coming directly from rehab centers there is a chance they have actually become addicted to drugs or alcohol again.

Many rules are given to the patients of halfway homes to ensure a safe and stable environment for all members of the household. These rules are in relation to who can visit the home to what substances are allowed and so fourth. Most importantly however it all comes down to the patient and that they are able to fight the addiction. The management of the halfway home also comes into account to ensure those patients are following the rules, along with the need to provide emotional support when required.

In New Jersey there has been a lot of development in terms of legal policies pertaining to drug rehab and post rehab programs which are worked on to ensure success among patients.
